The Epidemic of Poor Posture and True Alignment

Let’s talk about posture.

Slouching and inactivity can cause muscle fatigue and tension that ultimately lead to poor posture.

Poor posture can lead to back pain, spinal dysfunction, joint degeneration, rounded shoulders, and an extended belly.

Improving your posture and spinal health can be as simple as making a few lifestyle adjustments and receiving chiropractor care.

Symptoms of poor posture:

  • Back pain

  • Rounded shoulders

  • Extended belly

  • Bent knees when standing or walking

  • Head that either leans forward or backward

  • Body aches and pains

  • Muscle fatigue

  • Headache

How to improve your general posture:

  • Practice the rule of ‘curve reversal’ – for example, if you’ve been leaning over your desk, stretch back the other way.

  • Add in stretching exercises to your weekly routine to boost muscle flexibility.

  • Exercise regularly to improve muscle strength and tone.

  • Stretch your neck muscles regularly by turning your head from one side to another and around in a circle.

  • Since your abdominal muscles support your lower back, make sure they are in good condition with core exercises.

  • Avoid creating unnecessary imbalances by standing on one foot for long periods of time.

  • Cross your legs at the ankle, rather than the knee.

The importance of chiropractic adjustments.

While maintaining good posture throughout the day will help avoid pain and discomfort, an adjustment will guarantee true alignment. During a chiropractic adjustment, Dr. Rob will gently, yet firmly, manipulate your body’s joints to realign and restore function to your bones and muscles. Bones in your back, such as vertebrae, will be moved into proper alignment. While this won’t serve as a substitute for good posture, it will relieve pain, restore function, and create a path for good posture.

How to sit properly while working.

Since most of our patients spend much of their days working in front of a computer, here are some simple tips on how to sit properly while working.

1. Adjust the height of your chair so your feet rest flat on the ground.

2. Keep your knees at or below hip level.

3. Keep your head and neck balanced and in line with your torso.

4. Relax your shoulders. Keep your forearms parallel to the ground.

The process of a chiropractic adjustment will:

  • Soothe aching ligaments and muscles

  • Restore communication of your nervous system between your body and brain

  • Boost the function of your immune system

  • Aid in mood management

  • Support body functions such as reproduction, sleep, digestion, and mood

  • Improve your overall health and wellness
