How To Thrive Through The Holidays, Functional Wellness Style

It’s possible to thrive through the holidays.

Whether 2023 was the year for finding your health and wellness groove, or if you’re not sure how you’ll get through the holiday season because you’re not feeling your best, we have good news— it’s possible to thrive during a season typically associated with being busy, run down, and losing sense of self.

Holiday Wellness Tips

Focus On How You’re Eating More Than What You’re Eating

Nobody wants to skip those delicious holiday parties or classic meals in the name of healthy habits, so focus on listening to hunger cues, stopping when you’re full, and following a ‘three meals and a snack’ diet rather than eliminating food groups or skipping meals altogether.

Remember Your Good Habits

Water, sleep, and exercise are the foundations of a healthy lifestyle, and as simple as they sound, they will carry you through a busy season like November and December. If you find yourself getting neglectful in these areas, consider trying a tracker to make sure you’re staying on top of all three areas!

Journal Your Thoughts, Or Try Therapy

More family time, more traditions, more crowds, more get togethers… more feelings to work through? If you aren’t already journaling and/or talking with a therapist or counselor, this can be a great time to start.

Be Flexible— But Mindful— With Your Routines

While you might love your Pilates or CrossFit classes at home, you might not be able to make the same schedule when traveling for the holidays or if your studios close more often the next two months. Remember it’s more important to stay active overall than to do specific things, so have backup options ready— bodyweight or hotel workouts, walks with friends, or something new altogether. Consistency is key here!

Think About What’s In Your Cup

Consider an 80/20 guideline when it comes to alcohol and other fun holiday beverages like eggnog and hot chocolate. Fill 80% of your fluid intake to your non-caloric drinks (water, tea, coffee, etc.), and then 20% to those fun drinks (including everything from wine at dinner to late-night hot cocoa).

Get Proactive With Your Health and Self-Care

Don’t wait until you feel pain or a lack of energy to address your own health and self-care. Schedule your chiropractic adjustment, massage, and therapy sessions to make sure you are your best self for the best holiday season possible.
